Years of restructuring and privatisation, political interventions, and corrupt malfeasance led to a year-long shutdown of the once lively and bustling Croatian shipyard 3. Maj (3 May). For a full year, the workers remained home without pay, and the production facility fell silent. That moment of silence, in a facility that used to brim with sounds and activity, serves as the starting point for the portrayal of a specific space and time. The act of revealing the beauty of the spatial and auditory narratives of an industrial space, in the absence of workers and work processes, contextualizes the frightening socio-economic consequences of the “silence” and “emptiness” phenomena. After months of negotiations, in the fall of 2019, the production continued with an uncertain future.
