23 MFF opened: We returned into our cinema
“Instead of the cinema under the stars we returned into our Borak cinema, digitalised, renovated, which looks really great, as if we were in the cult film ‘Cinema Paradiso’ by Giussepe Tornatore, in which the passion for film prevails over all other human desires and feelings”, Robert Bubalo said at the opening of the 23rdedition of the Mediterranean Film Festival in Borak cinema, on Tuesday, October 11.

Bubalo pointed that the organisers of the Mediterranean festival have put together a great program of 45 titles, and besides the films in the competition we are screening a number of first class premieres and many other cultural events. He also added that, over the five festival days, the film authors and jury members from the entire Mediterranean are staying in Široki Brijeg – from Israel, Lebanon, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Ukraine.

In addition to films, the MFF has been taking care of young people for ten years, and this year too, the international film school is a part of the festival, through which high school students from several countries, together with educators and mentors from the USA, work on making a short feature film and documentary.

“The US Embassy has been the sponsor of the Mediterranean Film Festival for several years, the festival which, besides offering the diverse program, also invests a lot of energy, enthusiasm and knowledge into getting young people interested in film industry”, Laura Haugen said on the behalf of the US Embassy in B&H.

Lucy Eagleson and Tyler Gunderson, film workshop leaders who have been running the festival's film school for the past ten years, addressed the audience.

“The tradition is the topic of the films we are working on in Herzegovina this year, as culture and customs are really important and strong here. We are very happy and looking forward to the premiere of our films at the festival closing”, film educator Eagleson said and added that she is happy to have her ‘MFF family’ in Herzegovina.

Denis Zubac, on the behalf of general sponsor HT Eronet, the company that has been supporting this festival for more than ten years, addressed the audience in the Borak cinema, and pointed out that this company will once again reward the luckiest voter. After the official opening ceremony the festival was opened with the screening of documentary films from the competition, Croatian film ‘Babajanja’ by Ante Zlatko Stolica and ‘Summer Nights’ directed by Ohad Milstein. In cooperation with Film Centre Sarajevo the MFF will screen seven films that are masterpieces of B&H cinematography, then documentary films from the In Focus program, films for children within the MFF Fora program and fiction film ‘Savages’ by Dario Lonjak. The festival also brings the promotion of Željko Bebek's autobiographical book, the documentary films 'Princess' and 'Sing me a song'.

After the closing ceremony and the screenings of films created at the MFF School, the 23rd edition of the festival is going to be closed with the cinematic odyssey exploring David Bowie's creative, spiritual and musical journey in – the film ‘Moonage Daydream’.

We remind you that the Mediterranean Film Festival takes place from October 11 to 15 in Široki Brijeg. The competition includes ten feature-length documentaries that compete for the MFF "Grand Prix" award, and ten short documentaries that compete for the MFF "Best Short" award. The best film will be chosen by the audience, and that film is waiting for the MFF Audience Award.

The general sponsor of the Mediterranean Film Festival is HT Eronet.
