Džebo, Pause and Brešan to Decide the Grand Prix at the 27th Mediteran Film Festival
The Grand Prix for the best feature documentary film at the 27th Mediterranean Film Festival will be awarded by a three-member jury consisting of actress Alena Džebo, film and media theorist Johannes Pause, and Croatian director Vinko Brešan.
This year's jury brings together prominent figures from the film arts and academia, with experience in acting, directing, film and media theory, and work on international film projects. Together, they will select the film that will take home the Grand Prix of the 27th MFF.
Alena Džebo
Alena Džebo was born in Sarajevo in 1978. She graduated in acting from the Academy of Performing Arts in Sarajevo. As a freelance actress, she played numerous roles in award-winning plays in theatres in Sarajevo, Tuzla, Mostar, Zenica and Toronto. She has also appeared in numerous short and feature-length films, television series, and radio dramas. She received the Best Actress Award for her role in the film „Sabina K“ by Cristóbal Krusen at the CMM Film Festival in 2016 and at the Jaipur International Film Festival in India in 2017. For her role in the film „Import“ by Ena Sendijarević, she received the Best Actress Award (Miglior Attrice / Best Actress) at the 18th Lucania Film Festival in Marconia/Pisticci in 2017. She is also actively involved in drama education, with a particular focus on inclusive drama. In collaboration with the Association “Life with Down Syndrome FBiH,” she has created four inclusive theatre productions. She is a co-author of the publication Guidelines for Adapting Cultural Institutions for People with Disabilities and the creator of an accessibility adaptation of the Sarajevo Youth Theatre for people with disabilities. For her work and contribution to promoting the recording of books for the Library for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as for her inclusive drama work with children with disabilities, UNICEF Bosnia and Herzegovina awarded her the “Champion of Inclusion” recognition in 2015. In 2024, she received the international “Grozdanin kikot” Award from the Centre for Drama Education of Bosnia and Herzegovina for her work in inclusive drama pedagogy. She currently serves as President of the Association of Film Workers of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Johannes Pause
Johannes Pause was born in Hamburg, Germany, and received his PhD from Freie Universität Berlin in 2008. Following research positions in Gießen, Trier, and Dresden, he joined the University of Luxembourg in 2017, where he is a research scientist in the Department of Humanities. He is Vice Head of the University of Luxembourg Institute for Digital Ethics (ULIDE) and Deputy Programme Director of the Bachelor in Animation, a practice-based programme in 3D computer animation. His research interests include film and media studies, political aesthetics, and digital culture, with a particular focus on the relationship between cinema and political imagination. His most recent monograph, Populismus und Kino (2023), examines the aesthetics of populism in film.
Vinko Brešan
Vinko Brešan was born in Zagreb in 1964. His debut low-budget feature film “How the War Started on My Island” is one of the highest-grossing Croatian feature films in cinemas. His films “Marshal” and “Witnesses” were awarded at festivals in Berlin and Karlovy Vary, and his fourth feature film “Will not End Here” won the FIPRESCI critics' award in Karlovy Vary. The film “The Priest's Children” was nominated for the European Film Academy Award for Best Comedy. The television series “Dnevnik velikog Perice”, which he co-wrote and directed, won the Heart of Sarajevo Award for Best TV Series in the Comedy category and the Heart of Europe Award for Best TV Series in Eastern Europe in 2021. Brešan also works as a theatre director. The plays he directed, “Pljuska” and “The Play of Hamlet in the Village of Mrduša Donja”, were declared winners of Satire Days in 1998 and 2014.
